The Newmark Civil Engineering Laboratory, built in 1969, is home to the main Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) administrative office, faculty and grad student offices, conference rooms, several laboratories and a large, central crane bay. The building’s namesake, Nathan M. Newmark, led the Civil Engineering department from 1956 to 1973. He was a founding member of the National Academy of Engineering, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the recipient of the National Medal of Science, among many other awards and recognitions. Newmark also designed the first earthquake-proof skyscraper.

In 2011, the Newmark Lab received an addition: the M.T. Geoffrey Yeh Center. Located on the east side, the M.T. Geoffrey Yeh Center provides additional classrooms and conference rooms, as well as large, open collaboration spaces for students. Yeh received his B.S. in civil engineering in 1953 and became a successful real estate developer and philanthropist in Hong Kong.
