Designed by architect and U of I alumnus George Bullard (class of 1882) and dedicated in 1894, Engineering Hall is the first university building constructed for the sole use of one college. The distinct orange bricks and dark blue roof became symbolic of the university and inspired the iconic orange and blue school colors.

In 1998, the college began an $8 million renovation of the historical building, which now houses Grainger Engineering Administration offices and engineering-based student groups.
