We Are All United By Food: Mapping the United States' Food Supply Chain
In late 2019, Megan Konar and her team published the first high-resolution model and map of the United State's food supply chain. Bringing together eight sources of freight and shipping data, it shows a striking level of interconnectedness between regions in the US. It also highlights the counties that are most central to the food supply chain.

Charles Gammie is “one of the best of my generation of computationalists,” according to fellow black hole researcher Adam Frank at the University of Rochester. He has a “great intuition for physics” and an important role in “defining the next set of questions” for the field to answer, according to another colleague.

iBioFAB 2.0: Revolutionizing Synthetic Biology Research Through Automation
Automation is at the center of the Illinois Biological Foundry for Advanced Biomanufacturing, or iBioFAB 2.0, located inside the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. Operating since 2014, the one-of-a-kind living foundry accelerates the design, build, test, and learn (DBTL) cycle while taking synthetic biology research to the next level.

Illinois Researchers Creating Advanced Autopilot to Mimic the "Sully Factor"
It's called the "Miracle on Hudson." On January 15, 2009, U.S. Airways Flight 1549 left LaGuardia Airport in New York City en route to Seattle via Charlotte. Shortly after takeoff, the plane hit birds and lost two engines. Faced with few options, the captain, Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, took action and landed the plane in the Hudson River, saving the lives of the 155 people on board.
