Grainger Engineering in Space
Grainger Engineering in Space
First Illinois-led NASA spacecraft mission
The Carruthers Geocorona Observatory officially launched into space on September 24, 2025. Electrical and computer engineering associate professor and Y.T. Lo Fellow Lara Waldrop leads this groundbreaking mission, which is orbiting the sun and capturing high-resolution ultraviolet images of Earth’s upper atmosphere.
Leading the NASA Carruthers Geocorona Observatory Mission
The Carruthers Geocorona Observatory is using ultraviolet imaging to explore how Earth interacts with the space environment — a vital step toward understanding space weather impacts on satellites, communications and power grids.
Meet the Mission's Lead Scientist:
Dr. Lara Waldrop
Electrical and computer engineering
associate professor and Y.T. Lo Fellow
Behind the mission's name:
George R. Carruthers
The Carruthers Geocorona Observatory is named after Dr. George R. Carruthers and will continue his legacy. Carruthers, an illustrious Grainger Engineering alumnus and one of the first African American men to earn a doctorate degree in astrophysics, was a pioneering scientist who developed the first ultraviolet space camera used on the Apollo 16 mission.
Grainger Engineers Go Above and Beyond
To address the challenges facing our planet, we must sometimes look beyond it. That’s exactly what Grainger engineers are doing as they lead the way in space research.
