Chicago Tribune (Oct. 27) -- Some say Chicago and the U.S. suffer a critical shortage of engineers and developers. Others say that’s a myth. But all agree that companies must fight to grab the best. Employers must emphasize their culture, salary and growth opportunities, said Amy Fruehling, director of engineering career services at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Engineering. “If you’re not that top salary, there has to be another draw,” she said. Chicago companies say they trumpet the city’s cost of living, lower than in tech hubs on the East and West coasts, and other tangible benefits at their companies.
