Iwona Jasiuk, a professor of mechanical science and engineering (MechSE), has been named a Fellow of the Society of Engineering Science (SES).
Her work with biological materials focuses on bone. One ongoing project aims to explain the underlying mechanism that causes osteoporotic bone to break. Using electromicroscopy, Professor Jasiuk has successfully characterized the physical structure of normal bone and osteoporotic bone at both the micro- and nanoscales.
Before joining the Illinois faculty, she has also held faculty positions at Concordia University, the Georgia University of Technology, and Michigan State University. She received a PhD in theoretical and applied mechanics from Northwestern University after attending the University of Illinois at Chicago for her MS in structural mechanics and BS in structural engineering.
The SES promotes the development and strengthening of the interfaces between various disciplines in engineering, sciences, and mathematics. An SES Fellow shall be an individual who is distinguished in some field in which the Society has interest, who has been a Regular or Life Member of the Society for at least five years, and whose contributions to the Society and the technical community have justified this honor.
