Engineering at Illinois is ranked 5th overall in the U.S. News and World Report 's "2014 Best Graduate Schools" rankings.

MIT, Stanford, and University of California-Berkeley maintained their top three spots in the engineering schools overall rankings. The California Institute of Technology was ranked fourth, with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Georgia Tech, and Carnegie Mellon University tied for fifth. According to U.S. News, there were no significant changes within the top 50 engineering schools.

While the College maintained its position among the nation's elite engineering programs overall, several individual Illinois' engineering departments were among the top in their disciplines:

  • Civil Engineering was at #1
  • Agricultural/Biological was #2
  • Electrical/Electronic/Communications & Environmental Engineering were both at #3
  • Computer Engineering & Materials Science ranked #4

Ranking methodologies vary by discipline, but admissions selectivity and expert opinions on program quality are part of the equation for most programs.
