Rogers recognized by Materials Research Society

John A. Rogers, the Lee J. Flory-Founder Chair in Engineering Innovation at Illinois, has been recognized by the Materials Research Society (MRS) as the 2013 recipient of the Mid-Career Researcher Award, “for fundamental and applied contributions to materials, mechanics designs, and assembly techniques for stretchable/flexible electronic systems.”

Renowned for his pioneering work with transient semiconductor materials and flexible, stretchable electronics, Rogers has applied his expertise to devise technology solutions across such broad fields as solar power, bio-integrated electronics, sensing, thin film metrology, and fiber optics. He is the director of the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory at Illinois, with faculty appointments in materials science and engineering, chemistry, mechanical science and engineering, bioengineering, and electrical and computer engineering.

Last year, Rogers was named to Nature magazine’s “10 who mattered this year” list for taking innovations from ideas to engineering prototypes. In 2011, he received the Lemelson–MIT award for innovation and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. These honors followed a MacArthur Foundation 'genius' fellowship in 2009.

The MRS Mid-Career Researcher Award recognizes exceptional achievements in materials research made by mid-career professionals that demonstrate notable leadership in the materials area. The award will be presented at the 2013 MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco in April.
