Michael B. Bragg, a professor of aerospace engineering (AE) and executive associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Engineering, has been appointed to the Aeronautics Committee of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Advisory Council.

Reporting to the NASA administrator, the committee advises the agency on aeronautics programs and policies, and shapes national research agendas.

An AE faculty member the past 22 years, including seven years as department head, Bragg has been executive associate dean for the College since 2008. In that capacity, he oversees all faculty issues in the college, including hiring and retention, promotion, tenure and awards; manages resource planning in the college; and supports the dean in the College’s strategic planning and global initiatives.

An Illinois alumnus, he earned his BS and MS degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his PhD in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from Ohio State University where he initially served as an assistant, and later, associate professor in the department. In 1990, he returned to his alma mater as a faculty member and later head of the Department of Aerospace engineering.

Bragg has been a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) since 2004, and received the AIAA Aerodynamics Award in 2007. He recently completed his term as AIAA vice president-publications.

Editor's note: In July 2012, Bragg was named interim dean of the College of Engineering. He will begin his interim duties as dean on Aug. 16, when the current dean, Ilesanmi Adesida, assumes the role of vice chancellor of academic affairs and provost of the Urbana campus.
