This fall, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering published a book about its history. Leadership and Legacy: A History of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Illinois, edited by Professor Emeritus William J. Hall and Amr S. Elnashai, CEE professor and department head, features the writing of many distinguished contributors, as well as archival photos and a timeline of significant events.
Hall undertook the project this past spring, gathering previously published writings about the department's history and encouraging current and retired faculty to contribute. Three pieces written for the CEE magazine in 2004 by the late Professor Emeritus John Haltiwanger, were revised for inclusion in the book. Elnashai, in addition to serving as co-editor with Hall, wrote about the department's vision for the future.
A timeline of events, stretching from the department's earliest years to the present day, marks such significant dates as the construction of Newmark Lab and the Hydrosystems Laboratory, the tenures of department heads through the years, and significant research accomplishments.
Photographs from the University of Illinois Archives, some dating to the early 20th century, illustrate the instructional and research environment of previous generations.
