Ferreira, who joined the Illinois faculty in 1987, is the former director of the NSF-funded Center for Nanoscale Chemical-Electrical-Mechanical Manufacturing Systems (NanoCEMMS). His research focuses on industrial automation, particularly computer-controlled machine tools, nanopositioning and nanosensing, computational geometry and solid modeling as they relate to automated process planning and the discrete-event control of large-scale, flexibly automated systems.
“Election as an SME Fellow is limited to a select group of individuals each year, making it one of the most prestigious honors bestowed by the Society,” according to Dr. Marvin F. Devries, chair of the SME International Awards and Recognition Committee. “In fact, only 10 individuals were elected this year.”
The SME College of Fellows was created to honor those members who have made outstanding contributions to the field of manufacturing. A Fellow is a member recognized by the manufacturing community as a contributor to key aspects of the profession. This honor can only be earned through years of dedication and service to manufacturing engineering.
