The program recognizes scientists who make significant contributions to EMSL outside of their individual research efforts. Fellows are scientists who actively participate in developing plans and strategies to guide EMSL’s instrument and capability investments, science themes and user activities. They also are consultants for EMSL users and advocates for the user program.
“These new Fellows each have shown a strong commitment to the scientific success of EMSL,” said Don Baer, EMSL interim chief science officer. “Their contributions have already and will further strengthen EMSL’s capabilities and therefore the science done by our users.”
An Arthur and Virginia Naumann Faculty Scholar at Illinois, Werth is chair of the Environmental Engineering and Science Program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research expertise includes the reactive transport of pollutants in porous media, and development of sustainable mitigation technologies for pollutant remediation in soil and groundwater. As an EMSL user, Werth has collaborated with several PNNL and EMSL scientists, such as Mart Oostrom and Nancy Hess, and contributed to the development of new microfluidics and microfabrication facilities. He has helped shape EMSL’s future research plans and campaigns while serving as an advisory panel member for the geochemistry/biogeochemistry/subsurface science theme.
