Finding Lena, the Patron Saint of JPEGS

Wired (Jan. 31) --  In 1973, a photo of a Swedish Playboy model named Lena Forsen was used to engineer the digital image format that would become the JPEG. According to James Hutchinson, an editor at the College of Engineering at Illinois, Forsen was for engineers “something like what Rita Hayworth was for U.S. soldiers in the trenches of World War II.”
