Discover (January-February issue) -- Research on optogenetics, a technique that allows researchers to affect an animal’s behavior by beaming light onto genetically modified neurons – was cited by Discover as one of the top 100 stories of 2013. U. of I. materials science and engineering professor John Rogers developed the lightweight wireless system that has been tested on mice.
