Lectures in Materials Science & Engineering

The following lecture examples will give you a chance to see the format of the Material Science and Engineering courses offered by the University of Illinois Engineering Online program. Most of these courses contain video lectures with synchronized slides.

The course demos use Windows Media Technology and must be viewed with Internet Explorer 5.0 or later along with Windows Media Player using a Windows operating system on your computer.

MSE 445: Corrosion of Metals

  • View MSE 445 Lecture
  • Instructor: Carl Altstetter
  • Course Description: This course deals with the principles that determine the corrosion behavior of metals. Topics include electrochemistry, thermodynamics, and kinetics of corrosion. Batteries and fuel cells are used as examples of these principles. Then corrosion rates, corrosion control, cathodic and anodic protection, high-temperature corrosion, corrosion testing and corrosion-induced mechanical failure are also discussed.
  • Prerequisites: A first-year course in chemistry and a first-year/sophomore course in physics. Courses in advanced mechanics of rigid bodies and deformable bodies, thermodynamics, and materials will be useful.
