Course Description

This course analyzes processes and systems for energy conversion, including power and refrigeration cycles, air conditioning, thermoelectrics and fuel cells, ideal gas mixtures, and psychometrics. At the end of this class, students should be able to:

  1. Recognize common power cycle and refrigeration cycle processes and components
  2. Analyze the efficiency of power cycles and refrigeration cycles
  3. Determine sources of inefficiency in power and refrigeration cycles
  4. Analyze processes involving ideal gas mixtures
  5. Develop familiarity with gas-vapor mixtures - analyze common water-air mixture processes for air conditioning
  6. Calculate energy released by reacting (combusting) mixtures
  7. Use Engineering Equation Solver (EES)
