Illinois Scholar Undergraduate Researchers (ISUR) Leverage Mentorship

It’s no secret hands-on learning exposes students’ to professional skills needed for graduate school acceptance or research in industry. At Grainger Engineering, students leverage mentorship to boost their abilities.

On April 25, students in the Illinois Scholars Undergraduate Research (ISUR) Program presented their research at the annual ISUR Poster Expo. Students spend two semesters working closely with graduate student/postdoc mentors and faculty sponsors on research projects.

“The program helps you get more hands-on experience and exposure to technical writing. You gain skills outside of your classes and continue your development as an engineer,” said Charmaine Nieves, a mechanical science and engineering senior.

From characterizing different types of hydrogels to helping compress the heart for patients with heart failure, ISUR participants tackle real-world problems with their mentor. Students appreciate the direct application of their research into industry.

“[Our research] is sponsored by IBM, and I think it's super helpful because it gives a sense of urgency. If you're going into academia, your research may not be implemented soon. But, if you work in industry, it may be,” said César Díaz Blanco, a physics student.
