1 Grainger Engineering Faculty and 4 Alumni Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

The National Academy of Engineering elected 87 new members in February 2020. Five of these new members are faculty or alumni of The Grainger College of Engineering.

The National Academy of Engineering elected 87 new members in February 2020. Five of these new members are faculty or alumni of The Grainger College of Engineering. They are:
 
  • Nancy Sottos, Swanlund Chair and Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Grainger College of Engineering.
  • Joel Emer, Senior Distinguished Research Scientist at Nvidia and PhD alumnus of Grainger Engineering’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • Robert Gilbert, Department Chair at the University of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and a BS, MS, and PhD alumnus of Grainger Engineering’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
  • Michael Sutton, Distinguished Professor at the University of South Carolina’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and PhD alumnus of Grainger Engineering’s Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering (TAM)
  • Laura Niklason, Professor of Anesthesiology and Biomedical Engineering at Yale University and an BS alumnus of Grainger Engineering’s Department of Physics.
 
Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.  Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.
