After graduating from UIUC in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in ceramic engineering, Stephen D. Stoddard worked for Coors Porcelain Company before joining the University of California staff at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory as leader of the Ceramics Section. He retired from Los Alamos in 1980 to devote his full time to the consulting firm he had cofounded in 1970, Materials Technology Associates, Incorporated. A long-time member of the American Ceramic Society, he was elevated to fellow in 1962 and later served as president.
Senator Stoddard’s research and development interests include fabrication technology for pure oxide ceramics, special refractories for processing nuclear metals, and flame and arc plasma spray coating technology. He has been awarded 7 patents and has authored more than 35 technical publications.
In 1965, Senator Stoddard was awarded the prestigious PACE Award of the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers for significant contributions to the profession and to the general welfare of the people. Some of his other professional affiliations are fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, American Society for Metals and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has a long and distinguished record of civic and political service and presently serves as senator in the New Mexico State Legislature.
