While still a student, Robert Carrel authored several journal articles and reports on antenna research that are still being used some 30 years later. At Collins Radio Company, where he worked for eight years, he made significant contributions to research on communications antenna systems, led antenna systems research and development, and directed the division of antenna and airborne systems research and development. In 1970, Carrel and three colleagues formed Electrospace Systems, Inc., and in 1989, he was elected president and chairman of board. Electrospace is a leader in designing, manufacturing, and installing telecommunication systems for military and industrial customers worldwide. The company is a major supplier of secure, analog/digital, voice and data switching systems for military command centers, NASA, military test ranges, and the intelligence community. It also supplies satellite communication systems, antenna systems, and electronic warfare/intelligence systems and equipment for a variety of airborne, ground/mobile, and shipboard platforms. Carrel is a fellow in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Xi honor societies. In 1984, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Purdue University, and in 1988 he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UIUC.
