Pat Basu is a Board Certified physician specializing in radiology, an executive, and entrepreneur who has been a leader in the business, government, academic and clinical sectors. A former Stanford Physician, Basu currently serves as the President and CEO of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, where he leads several thousand team members and clinicians in their mission to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.
Most recently, Basu served as Senior Vice President at Optum and a member of the Executive Leadership team at UnitedHealth Group (UHG), a Fortune 5 company and the largest healthcare firm in the US. As a division president of OptumHealth, he held responsibility for a $9+ billion P&L and management span of 9,000+ executives, clinicians and team members. He was directly accountable for revenue, profit, cost, and quality for OptumCare, the largest physician practice business and value-based care business in the US.
Prior to his work with Optum and UHG, he helped start Doctor On Demand, a transformative, telehealth service that has enabled millions of patients to have a video visit with a physician or psychologist directly from their smartphone or computer. Under Basu’s leadership, Doctor On Demand grew from concept into a covered benefit for over 30 million Americans with over 700 employer, health plans, and hospital clients.
After taking leave from Stanford University, he served as a White House Fellow and Senior Advisor in the Obama Administration, where he held a Top Secret Clearance and served at highest levels of Federal government to help execute portions of the economic and health agenda. Basu was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, White House Fellow’s Regional Commissioner, US Italy Council, US Japan Foundation, US Germany Bridge, Illinois State Board of Health, and the Illinois Institute of Government & Public Affairs.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the University of Illinois Alumni Association and the Stanford University Medical Board of Governors, where he was a Founding Faculty Director of Health Policy and Finance. He has also served as Visiting Faculty at seven major US universities.
Basu is a recipient of the AMA’s Excellence in Medicine for Leadership Award in 2009, Stanford Medicine’s Physician of the Year Award in 2010, Chicago Crain’s “40 under 40” Award in 2017, and received the Distinguished Alumni Award from University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business in 2012.
