Elio D’Appolonia has spent the bulk of his career involved in the challenges and vagaries of soil mechanics and foundation engineering, as a teacher and as a practicing consulting engineer. Among his many achievements, he was project director for the design, instrumentation, and construction control of the major abutments for the Velodrome for the 1976 Summer Olympic Games. And he was responsible for the design and construction control of foundations for Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s major expansion. In these and other projects, he has shown himself to be an innovator in creating techniques to solve difficult construction problems.

He has received recognition for his contributions to the profession through many awards and citations from ASCE and other societies, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Deep Foundations Institute, the ASCE Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award, and the William H. Metcalf Award for Outstanding Engineering Achievement from the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania. An author of more than 75 papers, he is sought after worldwide as a lecturer and panelist.
