Earl H. Dowell is one of the foremost authorities on aeroelasticity and structural dynamics in the world. His pioneering work has inspired many students, engineers, and scientists to pursue and develop careers in this area. He has continually added to the knowledge of the profession through diligent research and consulting for government and industry. He has shared his research experience with a generation of graduate students. He has published over 100 articles and has written 3 research textbooks. As dean of the School of Engineering at Duke University, he has demonstrated exceptional ability as an administrator and in promoting engineering education. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics and of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
