An architect and engineer, Carl. A. Metz designed the physics building on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus as well as many commercial and residential buildings in Chicago. Metz also served as architect and engineer on the original McCormick Place building project. Professional memberships included the American Society of Civil Engineers, Western Society of Engineers, National Society of Engineers, Illinois Society of Engineers, and American Institute of Architects. He served as a director of the Chicago Building Congress.
