    • Quantum entanglement exhibits many interesting features that emerge only in high-dimensional systems. One such phenomenon is bound entanglement, entanglement that cannot be distilled using only local operations and classical communication. All previous reports on bound entanglement in photonic systems have relied on random unitary operations to introduce the necessary decoherence. Here, I discuss our efforts to realize the four-qubit bound-entangled Smolin state using the polarizations and orbital angular momenta of hyperentangled photons in an experiment that does not use random unitaries.
