Meet Mary McDowell

BS '86 Computer Science, President & CEO Mitel

Q What did you learn as a woman in engineering that has helped you in and out of your professional role?

My whole career has been in tech and I love being a part of a dynamic industry which is constantly evolving. Learning to learn, to question, to analyze, and to challenge was one of the greatest benefits of my time at Illinois. As we increasingly grapple with the societal impacts of technology, particularly in the digital world, these skills are more important than ever.

Q Do you think the landscape of women in STEM fields has changed? How so? Where do you see it going in the future?

Finally there are more of us! And I hope that trend continues. It's hard to overstate the importance of representation and having diverse perspectives at the table as we seek to align "the art of the possible" with social good.

Q Who inspires you as a woman in engineering?

I'm inspired every day by fabulous women breaking glass ceilings all over the place. But I hope for a time when women in leadership, women in science and technology aren't anything unique because it's so common.

Q What advice do you have for women in who are starting their journey in engineering?

I have never been one for having a "life plan" as life brings unexpected opportunities and challenges. But I am a believer in learning, exploring, and pushing oneself so that you're ready to take chances and risks as opportunities come your way and navigate through the rough patches. If you're too comfortable, you're not challenging yourself enough!.
