Professor Sinclair retired in 1982 after some 30 years as a member of the engineering faculty at UIUC. During his career he combined an intimate knowledge of metallurgical variables with solutions to problems of fracture, fatigue, and yielding of engineering structures. He, along with several of his colleagues, have made the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics world renowned in research dealing with the interface region between applied mechanics and metallurgy. For this and other works he was the first recipient of the prestigious Nadai Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1975.

In the late 1950s he introduced the first advanced course on flow and fracture of structural metals into the department’s curriculum and has been highly regarded by his students as an effective classroom teacher and director of research.

Professor Sinclair has been active in various professional societies, and has consulted widely for private industry, national laboratories, and many professional societies and organizations. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and of the American Society of Metals.
