Dr. Murphy began his teaching career as an instructor at the University of Colorado in 1929. He joined the staff of Iowa State College in 1930 where he has remained and greatly influenced the development of the current training of engineers through his own research, authorship, teaching, and technical society activity. His contributions have ranged over many areas of the engineering profession; he has been head of theoretical and applied mechanics, head of aeronautical engineering, and head of nuclear engineering. He has held many responsible chairmanships in national and international organizations, including the presidency of the American Society for Engineering Education in 1962-1963. His seven books and many articles cover many fields and general problems in engineering. He is co-editor of the General Engineering Handbook.

His distinction has been recognized by his being awarded the American Society for Engineering Education George Westinghouse Award and by his being the first Anson Marston Distinguished Professor at Iowa State University.
