After working for various engineering offices, Professor Ketchum began his academic career at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1937. In 1944, he joined Floyd B. Browne and Associates in Marion, Ohio, and in 1945 established his own firm whose present name is Ketchum, Konkel, Barrett, Nickel and Austin. In 1968 he became a professor of civil engineering at the University of Connecticut. Professor Ketchum is an authority on, and one of the proponents of, folded plates and thin shell roofs, and has been responsible for the development of new types of shells. He has designed and built numerous outstanding structures and directed large engineering projects. He has lectured widely during his career (Yale University, Cornell University, Penn State University, Rutgers University, and many others) and has contributed to the education of many young engineers. He is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Concrete Institute.
