Dr. Johnston received his master’s degree from Lehigh University and PhD from Columbia University. Later he returned to Lehigh’s Fritz Engineering Laboratory where he was in charge of research programs and became its director in 1947. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 1950 and retired in 1968. Dr. Johnston has made notable contributions to the understanding of torsion of steel structural members, and initiated research on the effects of residual stresses on steel-column strength. He developed Lehigh’s initial research on the plastic design of steel frames and directed it toward the development of rules essential to its successful application. He is the coauthor of two books and the editor and part author of three editions of the Guide to Stability Criteria for Metal Compression Members.

He received the American Society of Civil Engineers’ J. James R. Croes Medal in 1937 and again in 1954 for work on torsion of steel members. In 1974 he received the ASCE’s Ernest E. Howard Medal to acknowledge his “eminence as an educator, researcher, designer, and author.” He is a member of the American Academy of Engineering, American Society for Engineering Education, and American Society for Testing and Materials.
