Professor Bayne began his career in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at UIUC as an instructor in 1946. In 1970 he was named associate department head with major responsibility for the undergraduate program. He has repeatedly been recognized as an outstanding teacher, having received the Everitt Award for Teaching Excellence in 1968, the Stanly H. Pierce Award in 1981, the 1984 Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Outstanding Teacher Award and in 1985, the UIUC College of Engineering Halliburton Engineering Education Leadership Award.

Long active with student honor societies, Professor Bayne was a faculty adviser for 30 years to the local chapter of Pi Tau Sigma, was national president of Pi Tau Sigma from 1971 to 1974, and was president of the Association of College Honor Societies from 1973 to 1975. He served widely on college and campus committees, almost always in the area of student welfare or instructional improvement.

In recognition of his work with the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Alumni Constituent Group, Professor Bayne received the UIUC Alumni Association Loyalty Award in 1985. He served for four years as a director of the University of Illinois Athletic Association. Since retiring in 1985 he has continued to teach and to work in alumni relations for his department.
