Tommy Carver

Tommy Carver is a junior majoring in Computer Science with a minor in the Hoeft Technology and Management Program. He was born in New York City and was raised in Rye, NY and Stamford, CT. Throughout most of his time on the East Coast, Tommy was an academy soccer player who travelled across the country for games and showcases.

During his first year on campus, Tommy joined Theta Tau, a professional engineering fraternity. Shortly afterwards, he founded an RSO called Project: Code, aimed at creating an environment where anyone interested in programming could learn and feel welcome. Seeking to tear down the mental block preventing many from learning to program, Tommy worked as President and was successful in enabling people from all sorts of backgrounds to workand learn together in their shared interests of programming. In his second year, Tommy was elected Treasurer of Theta Tau and continued as President and Co-Founder of Project: Code. He also began participating in the CS Student Leadership Council, helpingto organize and run events such as one celebrating underrepresented groups within CS. Towards the end of his Sophomore year, he helped found and start up an affinity group for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) called HeForSWE, trying to grow inclusion and advocacy efforts by increasing male allies in STEM. During his junior year, Tommy was elected President of Theta Tau, where he helped the fraternity adapt to a COVID year as well as increase inclusion and equity efforts within the fraternity. Tommy isextremely grateful for all of these opportunities, as well as all of the mentors that helped him grow into positions to get there.

The Grainger College of Engineering has given Tommy the academic foundations and professional assistance to be able to pursue his interests outside of the classroom. After his freshman year, Tommy worked as a Data Science intern at Gro Intelligence, working to help provide analysis on agriculture to help feed the world. Following his sophomore year, he joined IBM to work as a Security Software Engineering Intern to prevent cyber attacks for companies across the world. This summer, Tommy will join C3.ai as a Forward Deployed Engineering Intern. He is excited to pursue his interests in the AI field, especially in relation to Digital Transformation.

Tommy would like to thank all the people in his life that have supported him and helped him become the person he is today. His family, friends, Theta Tau brothers, and HeForSWE and Project: Code executive members have been there throughthick and thin for him, picking him up when he is down and pushing him to constantly achieve more than he thought he ever could.
