Materials Science and Engineering, 2020
Originally from Normal, Illinois, Jose Mancias is a junior at the University of Illinois in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. During the fall semester of 2018, Jose studied abroad in Sweden at the Faculty of Engineering, LTH. Living in Lund, Sweden for five months taught Jose numerous lessons about different cities and cultures. Jose shared that he was surprised by “the high price of living in Sweden.” The David Opperman Study Abroad Scholarship was invaluable to Jose as it “helped the adjustment to the higher cost of living.” During his time abroad, Jose was also able to travel to Denmark, Norway, Austria, The Netherlands, and Belgium.
At the University of Illinois, Jose has spent his time participating in a multitude of activities. In April of 2017, Jose was “inducted into Keramos Honors Fraternity,” where he “assists in administration of Fraternity as Executive Board Member and improves web presence.” Jose was also a project leader for Engineering Open House, leading “a group of students to present a booth at Engineering Open House.” Jose works as a research assistant at the MAAß Research Lab where he “analyzes small scale crystal plasticity such as diffusion couples and intermetallic growth.”
Thanks to the David Opperman Study Abroad Scholarship, David was able to take the skills he learned at the University of Illinois and use them around the world.
