Leo Thomas played a major role in the development of the Kodak instant camera and film products. He also played a significant management role in the development of the Kodak disc cameras and film and the film and the Kodak EKTACHEM Clinical Analyzer. He has been a strong supporter of innovation and education and has worked to improve the environment for the advancement of science and technology.

Thomas is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Society of Photographic Scientists and Engineers, and the Directors of Industrial Research. He is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, and the Engineering Research Board. He is co-chairman of the Board of Chemical Sciences and Technology of the National Research Council.
