Fontaine Richardson has made significant contributions to engineering and computer science. His research led to the development of many new, innovative, and important products in the field of computer-aided design and computer graphics, including interactive CAD/CAM systems, integrated circuit design tools, a color ink-jet plotter, and application software. He was one of four founders of Applicon, Inc., a company that pioneered in developing interactive CAD/CAM systems, and he contributed significantly to its success as a leader in the field. He has worked as an independent consultant and was a senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT. He currently is a partner and vice president of Eastech Management Company. Serving as technical director and board member for a number of high-technology companies, he has helped foster research interaction between UIUC’s Department of Computer Science and the computer industry. He is a strong supporter of computer science education at the University of Illinois at Urbana=Champaign and is the first president of the newly formed Computer Science Alumni Association at UIUC.
