To Richard Bott Engdahl, a true pioneer in air pollution abatement research for over three decades of substantial contributions to industry and government to better utilize and manage our nation's fuel and energy resources, starting long before "ecology" and "energy crisis" became household words.

Mr. Engdahl has directed or participated in most of Battelle's research related to air pollution abatement in industrial combustion and the operation of process equipment. The projects with which he has been associated have ranged from the development of low-pressure-loss dust collectors to the use of model techniques in flow research to the analysis of new pollution-control processes to the study of burner emission measurements. His three decades of contributions to government and industry efforts to control the environment have made him a recognized authority in the field.

He is a diplomat of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and a member of the National Academy of Engineers' Panel on Sulfur Dioxide Control for Industrial Processes. Mr. Engdahl is past chairman of the Air Pollution Control Division and the Board of Technology of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers; a member of the Air Pollution Control Association, American Meteorological Society, American Industrial Hygiene Association, and many engineering honorary societies. He is a registered professional engineer in Ohio.
