As a manager and executive for Rockwell International, Kent Black has emphasized the importance of creating an environment in which engineers can do their best. By creating an environment in which engineers can be supported in their work, recognized for their efforts, encouraged to be creative and innovative, provided with adequate opportunity for professional development, and treated with honesty and mutual trust, he has made a significant contribution to the smooth working relationship in his division at Rockwell.

In 1984, he was appointed vice chairman of the Association for Higher Education of North Texas, and he also serves on its board of directors. He is a member of the Development Board of University of Texas at Dallas, the board of the Southern Methodist University Foundation for Science and Engineering, and the College of Engineering Foundation Advisor Council at the University of Texas at Austin.
