Honors Credit Learning Agreements

There are courses already designated for honors credits on campus, but often, as an engineering student, your schedule may make it difficult fit in these courses. Therefore, you may designate any course in your schedule for honors credits. The instructor must agree. HCLAs may be obtained from the documentation rack outside 206 Engineering Hall.

Benefits of an HCLA

  • Enhance your undergraduate instruction through independent study for honors credit
  • Enables completion of honors activities requirements without enrolling in a special honors course or section
  • Ability to transform a "regular," i.e., non-honors course, into an "honors" course and to receive transcript notation for the effort – accomplished by a student-instructor agreement whereby you agree to complete a course-related activity of an extraordinary nature which may be in addition to or in lieu of regular course work

Successful completion of the agreement will be noted on the student's permanent record in the same manner as any officially identified honors course or section, with an "H" appearing beside the course entry. Unsuccessful attempts will not be noted.

NOTE: In order to receive honors credits, the grade in the course must be B- or higher. Also, no honors credit will be given for agreements completed in courses taken on a credit/no credit grading basis.

Faculty and Student Guidelines for Honors Credit Learning Agreements

You are responsible for initiating discussion with your instructor about undertaking extraordinary work and independent study in connection with regular courses. It is your responsibility to:

  • Develop the learning agreement
  • Describe the work to be completed
  • Confirm the agreement with your instructor
  • Submit the form online

Approval and acceptance of learning agreements is at the discretion of your instructor who may wish to limit the number of such agreements, possibly accepting them on a first-come, first-served basis. Topics or areas of investigation may also be specified by your instructor.

Your instructor can determine whether work to be done under the learning agreement is in addition to regular work in the course or is to be substituted in part for regular work.

You should expect to devote approximately 15 hours of additional time to an honors project.

The substance of learning agreement proposals will be assessed by your instructor according to professional standards. The work proposed should be extraordinary in the context of the course. The scope of the project must be manageable within the confines of a single semester. It is recommended that you meet with your instructor several times to discuss progress.

The form or product of the HCLA is limited only by your creative imagination, subject to professional standards of the discipline and approval of your instructor.

At the end of the semester your instructor will indicate whether the work agreed to has been completed and whether honors credit is to be granted by completing the grade roster. The option to give honors will be available to the professor only if the HCLA was submitted and properly processed by The Grainger College of Engineering.

Your instructor may decline to grant honors credit if the work has not been completed satisfactorily. The instructor is the sole judge of the grade earned and whether honors credit is to be granted; however, all grading decisions, including the question of granting honors credit, are subject to appeal under campus rules and regulations governing capricious grading.
